Wake County Public Libraries celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with special programming

Join Wake County Public Libraries to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month with events at locations across the county. Programs, which include crafts, art, movies and more, recognize the cultures and contributions of Hispanic communities in engaging and educational ways.

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor and explore the many cultures and experiences that enrich our community here in Wake County and beyond,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “We invite everyone to visit their local library to discover something new and learn more about Hispanic heritage.”

While Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15–Oct. 15, library events begin Sept. 8 and run through Oct. 21. See the full list here.

All programs are free, but some require registration. Featured opportunities include:

Mexico: Pueblos Mágicos and UNESCO Cities and Sites
Tuesday, Sept. 15 | 6:30–7:30 p.m.
Virtual
Explore Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) and UNESCO World Heritage cities and sites on a virtual journey through colorful towns, ancient ruins, historic centers and breathtaking landscapes.

K-5th Adventures: Papel Picado!
Thursday, Sept. 17 | 4:30–5:15 p.m.
Southeast Regional Library
Children from kindergarten through fifth grade can make their own papercut decorations to celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Herencia 2026: Reception & Artist Talk
Wednesday, Sept. 23 | 6–7:30 p.m.
Oberlin Regional Library
Diamante Arts & Cultural Center presents a curated group exhibition by North Carolina Latino artists, celebrating the diversity of voices in our communities. This evening’s reception will welcome and celebrate the selected artists. Interpretation will be provided for both Spanish and English speakers.

Piraguas!: K-5th Adventures
Thursday, Sept. 24 | 4:30–5:15 p.m.
Cary Regional Library
Children from kindergarten through fifth grade can create a game inspired by piraguas, a traditional shaved ice dessert.

Fiesta de Arte
Saturday, Sept. 26 | 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Enjoy hands-on arts and crafts. Create your own Talavera tile, Guatemalan worry doll and tissue paper flowers.

Frida's Flower Hats!: K-5th Adventures
Wednesday, Sept. 30 | 4:30–5:15 p.m.
Southgate Community Library
Children from kindergarten through fifth grade will learn about the famous Mexican artist, test their art identification skills and create a flower hat inspired by Frida Kahlo!

Takiri Folclor Academy
Saturday, Oct. 3 | 2–3 p.m.
Green Road Community Library
Drop by the library to enjoy an hour of dance rhythms from Latin America.

  Did you know that Wake County Public Libraries offers books in Spanish for all ages? Whether you're a native speaker, brushing up on the language or teaching a child, the libraries have books to meet the need.
• Booklists
  Two new booklists recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans. The Hispanic and Latino Authors and Hispanic Heritage lists include books, eBooks and audio books for all ages.
• Book displays
  Librarians have created special Hispanic Heritage Month displays featuring books by Hispanic authors.
